The rough outline of the story I've heard is this. Louis' father was in charge of Transportation and Navigation for the Suez Canal Company in Port-Said, (on the Mediterranean end of the canal, where his children grew up). When the Suez Company went bankrupt, the Margutti family returned to Europe and settled in Paris.
By the time Lisette marries, about 1900, if I remember rightly, her father is listed on her marriage certificate as "disparu" -- disappeared--and her dowry is unpaid. Laure remarries in 1910, after her first husband is declared legally dead, according to the rules of the French government.
In fact it has since emerged that Louis' father went to South America, and died in 1917 in Punta Arenas, Chile.

Here is an interesting photo I found today. The back side is marked 1892 by the photography studio, which probably indicates the year it was taken, for the photographer's files. It was taken in Trieste, Italy.
From left to right, I believe that we are seeing:
Lisette (seated, with flowers in her lap), Louis (sitting on the decorative railing behing her), Auguste (standing next to Louis), Laure, baby Victor (toddler in a dress), and Laure's father, Victor Chartrey.
This is the first picture I have found of Auguste, our great-grandfather Margutti. He would be the uncle of Albert Margutti.
